    Born November 9, 1818, in Orel Province, Russia; died of cancer of the spine September 3, 1883, in Bougival, France; son of Sergei Nikolaievich (a military officer) and Varvara Petrovna (Lutovinova) Turgenev; children: Pelageia (with Avdotya Ivanov).

    Education: Attended University of Moscow, c. 1834; University of St. Petersburg, graduated, 1837; attended University of Berlin, 1838-41. Religion: Russian Orthodox.

    Career

    Novelist and dramatist. Russian Ministry of Interior Affairs, Moscow, Russia, member of staff, 1843-45.
